The area near Annapolis was originally settled in 1649 by Puritans, who named the area Providence. Over time, these Puritans moved to the area near the harbor, first calling it "Town at Proctor's," then "Town at the Severn," and finally "Anne Arundel's Towne." In 1694, the town was renamed Annapolis in honor of Princess Anne of Denmark and Norway, who later became the Queen of Great Britain. Annapolis served as the home to many rich and cultured families and became the temporary capital of the United States in 1783. The nearby city of Bowie, which began as a railroad settlement called Huntington City in 1870, gained its current name in 1880. Edgewater developed as a southern suburb of Annapolis, mainly consisting of retail businesses and residential homes on the southern side of the South River.

Today, the Annapolis area is well known as the location of the United States Naval Academy. The Annapolis-Bowie-Edgewater area has a rich history that is demonstrated by its many landmarks and historical sides. Annapolis is also the home of the oldest state house in continuous use in the United States, the Maryland State House. Other notable sites include the Maryland World War II Memorial and Preble Hall, which contains the U.S. Naval Academy Museum.
